What is UniPrint?
UniPrint is a collection of software-based printing solutions specifically designed
for server-centric environments. At the heart of the UniPrint solution is our Universal
Printer Driver which is designed specifically for Citrix, Microsoft Remote Desktop
Services (formally known as Terminal Services), Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
and non-Windows host system servers. With UniPrint, printing to network printers,
local printers, USB printers, or any specialized device is all performed by a single
Universal Printer Driver, with all available printer properties.
Why do I need it?
Organizations which use server-based computing often experience printing related
challenges similar to the following:
- Slow terminal servers and access to the applications running on them.
- Users often experience “hanging” or lose connection to their sessions.
- IT administrators have the overwhelming task of managing many printer drivers on
both clients and servers within large and geographically dispersed organizations.
- Expensive bandwidth consumption due to large print file sizes can increase an organization’s
operating costs substantially.
- Excessive time spent on printing administration and printing-related help desk calls;
removes resources from more proactive IT projects.
How does UniPrint work?
When a user requests the server to process a print job, the UniPrint Server captures
the request, converts it into a Portable Document Format (PDF) printer file, and
transfers it to the desired printer or server. The transfer process differs depending
on which UniPrint edition is being used. More detailed information and simplified
data path diagrams for each edition is available online at
http://www.uniprint.net/ProductUniPrintSuite.aspx.
What is UniPrint Terminal Server Edition (TSE)?
UniPrint Terminal Server Edition (TSE) provides all the same features as UniPrint
Server, but functions for environments that only use Microsoft Remote Desktop Services
(Terminal Services) for application access. If you only have terminal servers and
no Citrix servers, then this is right solution for your organization.
What are UniPrint Gateway Edition and UniPrint Gateway Terminal Server Edition?
Both UniPrint Gateway Edition and UniPrint Gateway TSE provide all the features
of UniPrint Server and UniPrint TSE plus support for thin-client devices, centralized
printer management and simplified remote deployment. UniPrint Gateway manages printing
on behalf of thin client devices such that no client-side printer drivers, including
UniPrint Client software, are required. As with UniPrint Server and UniPrint TSE,
no additional printer drivers, other than the UniPrint Universal Printer Driver,
are required on your Citrix/Remote Desktop server. The easy to use UniPrint Management
Console enables the network administrator to centrally manage printers on the UniPrint
Spool Server. Since UniPrint can be deployed remotely through Active Directory,
travel is no longer required between office locations just to perform server administration.
What is UniPrint Host Edition?
UniPrint Host Edition enables users who need to print from a mainframe or midrange
host system, like UNIX, AS/400, System z or Linux, to Windows-based printers. Users
who connect to their host system through a terminal emulation program or through
ICA/RDP can now extend their printing capabilities beyond the host system environment
in a simple and cost effective way.
What is UniPrint VDI Edition?
One of the key advantages of Desktop Virtualization is that user experience is the
same as that of a standard PC. However, printing in a VDI environment can be challenging
for network administrators to manage. UniPrint VDI Edition preserves the user experience
while simplifying printer and especially printer driver management.
Which UniPrint edition do I need?
Since UniPrint is printer model independent, an organization is free to select the
UniPrint edition that best suits its network and user environment. This makes it
simple to match the printing functionality required to the type of servers utilized
by an organization.
How is UniPrint sold?
UniPrint Server, UniPrint Terminal Server Edition, UniPrint Gateway Edition and
UniPrint Gateway Terminal Server Edition are all licensed on a per server basis.
UniPrint Host Edition is licensed by annual printed-page volume and UniPrint VDI
Edition is licensed on a concurrent user basis. A
