Client-Server Printing in Citrix Environments
UniPrint Infinity printing solution eliminates Citrix printing issues and extends the capabilities of Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop technology to printing. Based on its patented, award winning PDF-based Universal Printer Driver (UPD), UniPrint converts and encrypts print data into much smaller sized PDF print jobs, enabling fast data transmission and secure delivery of printing across multiple platforms from anywhere, on any user device, to any printer.

Citrix Printing Solutions
At the same time, UniPrint’s UPD negates the need to install multiple manufacturer printer drivers on the application server or VDI image, making printer deployment and management much simpler. As a result, Citrix network printing is much easier, more stable and more cost effective than ever before.
- Eliminates printer driver incompatibilities and enhances server stability in Citrix printing
- Supports thin and thick, local and remote clients connecting to Citrix
- Enables consistently fast and reliable remote printing
- Compresses print data to PDF files, reducing bandwidth consumption by over 90%
- Allows centralized printer management and remote deployment reduces IT admin overhead
- Enables clientless printing to networked printers
- Provides end-to-end print data protection
How it works
The user starts an ICA session by logging into the XenApp/XenDesktop server. From an open application, the user prints to either an enumerated network printer (Gateway printer) or the UniPrint printer. Using the UniPrint universal printer driver (UPD), a compressed PDF file is created and then transferred to the UniPrint Bridge.
The UniPrint Bridge acts as a router and routes the PDF print job accordingly, based on the type of printer chosen:
If the UniPrint printer is selected, the print job will be routed to the user’s PC.
If a Gateway printer is selected, the print job is directed to the UniPrint Print Server.
The PDF print job is then rendered into RAW print data.
On a PC, the UniPrint Client renders the PDF print job using one of the native drivers installed on the PC. NOTE: For client-server printing, a print server is not required.
On the UniPrint Print Server, the PDF print job is rendered into a RAW file using one of the native drivers installed on the print server.
The RAW print data is then sent to the appropriate printer for printing.
Fast Printing and Secure Delivery
UniPrint’s proprietary Bi-directional Information eXchange Protocol (BIXP) provides a direct and encrypted channel for the speedy transfer of compressed PDF print data, enabling secure delivery, faster print speed, as well as real-time printer status updates.
Improving Server Stability
UniPrint Infinity is ideal for medium to large enterprise environments. UniPrint UPD replaces all manufacturer printer drivers on the application server, eliminating instability issues frequently found when printing in Citrix environments. For full redundancy and fault tolerance, UniPrint Infinity features a High Availability (HA) Module that duplicates both the bridge and the print servers, and also supports Microsoft clustering, ensuring maximum uptime for your printing system.
Optimizing Bandwidth Availability
Typically print jobs are sent as uncompressed RAW or EMF data across limited bandwidth connections which often slow down printing, and can bring application access to a halt. With UniPrint Infinity, print data is compressed by over 90% into PDF-based print jobs. Not only is the print job size significantly reduced, but now users can preview, e-mail or archive the print job in PDF format.
Remote Deployment and Centralized Management
Administrators can remotely deploy any UniPrint component using Active Directory Group Policy. Once UniPrint Infinity has been installed, centralized printer management can be accomplished through the UniPrint Management Console from any UniPrint server component.
Enabling Printing for All Clients
UniPrint Infinity enhances printing in heterogeneous client environments. By using emulated print queues shared from the UniPrint Bridge, UniPrint Infinity removes the need for printer driver installation on both client machines and Citrix Servers and isolates them on a Print Server. Thin/thick clients are able to print clientlessly to the Print Server using UniPrint emulated queues.
